Who are the St. Louis Cardinals?
February 15, 2010
Want to learn a little more about the greatest team in baseball? I’ll give you a little background on the St. Louis Cardinals, how great they have been in the MLB over the past decades, and a roster of exactly who is on the St. Louis Cardinals team currently.
General Background Information on the St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are a major league baseball team based in St. Louis, Missouri, and are part of the Central Division of the National League. They joined the National League in 1892 and have since won 10 World Series championships, setting the record for the most wins of any team in the National League, and second to the New York Yankees (27 wins) for the most World Series titles of any team in Major League Baseball history.
Busch Stadium is the home of the Cardinals, the newest one built in 2006. The oldest Busch Stadium was formerly known as Sportsman’s Park until it was renamed after team owner Gussie Busch and the rest of Busch family of Anheuser-Busch in 1953. The second Busch Stadium followed the at-the-time trend of serving as a multi-purpose stadium in 1966 and witnessed some of the greatest Cardinals legends like hall-of-famers Stan Frank Musial, Bob Gibson, sportscaster Jack Buck, and one of the history’s greatest shortstops Ozzie Smith. The newest Busch Stadium which opened just four years ago has already been a good luck charm for our beloved St. Louis Cardinals, as they went on to win the 2006 World Series. With a total capacity of 46,861, the “New Busch Stadium” allows a great number of fans to see each game.
With every great baseball team comes an even greater rivalry, and that Chicago Cubs – St. Louis Cardinals rivalry has been in existence since the 1885 World Series, making it one of the longest running and most intense MLB rivalries out there. Chicago and St. Louis have a short distance of 300 miles between them, allowing for easy travels for the fans. The late 1990′s Mark McGwire/Sammy Sosa race to break the home run record added even more fuel to an already fired up rivalry. The Cardinals-Cubs will continue on as one of the greater rivalries in the MLB – each game more exciting than the last!
